Day 1 – From Paris to Avignon
Morning : TGV to Avignon and coach transfer to Avignon youth hostel.
Afternoon : Guided visit of the World Heritage Palais des Papes built between 1334 and 1363 in a simple and austere style but, nevertheless, extremely impressive. Head of the papacy for a century.
Dinner and night in hostel.
Day 2 - Nîmes and Pont du Gard
Morning : guided visit of the impressive World Heritage site : Pont du Gard. The superb 3 level Roman bridge is remarkably preserved.
Afternoon : Visit of Nîmes, nicknamed the French Rome.
Dinner and night in hostel.
Day 3 - Vaison-la-Romaine and Orange
Morning : guided visit of Vaison-la-Romaine, a very important Roman and Gallo-Roman city with numerous baths, villas, a theatre, a still-active roman bridge.
Afternoon: Visit of Orange, with its impressive Roman World Heritage Theatre, constantly used and its Roman Arc de Triomphe.
Dinner and night in hostel.
Day 4 - Arles and les Baux de Provence
Morning : guided visit of the city of Arles which was the capital of Roman Provence. Its World Heritage monuments include the Roman amphitheatre, still in excellent condition. It is famous not only for its Roman monuments, but for its beautiful Romanesque church and cloister. Arles played an important role in Van Gogh’ s artistic life. In the area he painted over 200 canvases including the Hospice and the Aliscamps.
Afternoon : Visit of Les Baux de Provence, a village and ancient castle built on a 245 meter outcrop with breath-taking views over the whole region.
Dinner and night in hostel.
Day 5 - Aix-en-Provence
Morning : Guided visit of the town of Aix-en-Provence, one of the favourite cities of both French people and tourists, with its beautiful streets, numerous fountains, and shady corners. The visit will include Cézanne’s studio.
Afternoon : free to have time to enjoy the charm of the city.
Day 6 - Back to Paris
Morning : choice between
– Free time in Avignon
– a short excursion to discover the two impressive towns of Beaucaire and Tarascon, guarding the river Rhône.Afternoon : Return to Paris or Roissy-CDG Airport by TGV.
